Tips for Preparing to Wear Hijab

Deciding to Wear Hijab for most women is a big step. Whether you are 22 or 52 it is still a big step. Entering the "Hijabi World" can seem scary but there are some easy steps to take to ensure you are ready and that you're transition is smooth and enjoyable. The decision making process is a three part process which involves the Body, Mind and Soul. Each part is equally important.

Body This part of the preparation is really about what you'll be wearing. Will you start with a regular hijab? Will you wear khimar? Niqab? Will you wear long skirts? Abayas? Pants? It seems that the fashion/ clothing world is not made for a Mohajaba. More often than not, you'll find yourself frustrated at your favorite store when you feel like nothing is Hijab friendly. I promise you, that feeling goes away. Soon enough you will be able to envision a fabulous outfit that incorporates that gorgeous chiffon blouse you just bought.

There are many basic items which can make almost any outfit Hijab friendly, you just have to be creative sometimes. My must have basics are cardigans, balzers and long sleeve shirts.

There are many fantastic Main Muslim companies which take the guessing out of it. They're clothes are made for Mohajaba sisters. They are long, modest and are perfect for any Hijabi, new or veteran. Some of my favorites are:

The other side of this is the actual Hijab. How will you style your Hijab? Getting the hang of styling takes practice and I often have sisters come to me asking for a tutorial session. You can find lots of great Hijab tutorials on YouTube also.

Don't ever feel like you have to suppress your inner fashionista because you wear Hijab. Hijab and fashion can go together beautifully. It's about a "fusion of fashion and faith".

Mind

This aspect of preparation is about education and knowledge. This part is very important not just for your own understanding but so that you may answer questions that others will have. You'll want to know the answer to a few basic questions: - why are Muslim women asked to Wear Hijab? - who can see you without your Hijab - what's the difference between Hijab and niqab? - are Muslim women forced to Wear Hijab?

It is important to have a strong understanding of the what's and why's of Hijab in Islam.

Soul This is about you. Why did you choose to Wear Hijab? Every woman has her own story, her own journey and although very different they are all equally important. It doesn't matter how you got to this decision, what is important is that you made it. The Soul aspect is also about understanding and defining your position and role as a Mohajaba Muslimah. Since we are obvious Muslims, we have to Strong ambassadors for our deen. You have to come to a point where you have chosen to be a Muslim so that you can wholeheartedly represent it in every action of your life.

Hijab is more than the clothes you wear. It's the way you carry yourself, the way you interact with others, the way you speak, it's everything.

I pray that Allah makes your journey easy and that as you strive to please Allah Swt, you will be rewarded greatly today and in the hereafter.
